Best Brunch in Chitown (so far)
After watching the blueberry-pancake episode of "Bobby Flay's Throwdown", I had this unbelievable hankering for some excellent pancakes. I looked near and far for a Chicago pancake spot akin to The Clinton Street Baking Co. featured on the show, but to no avail. Hot Chocolate's berry pancakes (or more accurately, the singular pancake) while good, was too spongy and cake-like. Toast's pancakes were downright awful, along with the rest of what we ate there. Yolk's banana-blackberry-pancakes were delicious. The pancakes themselves are fluffy with a nice crisp. Within the cake itself, there is just the right amount of blackberries and banana liqueur. On top, lies a heap of fresh banana slices and blackberry compote. Because I ordered my pancakes as a side to my omelet, there were only two in the stack. After my visit to Yolk, my blueberry-pancake craving is now sated; Yolk's blackberry-banana pancakes were the perfect remedy. Overall, Yolk's food is excellent and the restaurant's kitchen functions like a well-oiled machine. (My girl and I had front-row seats as we sat at the counter). Some of the drawbacks to Yolk include (1) the wait and (2) the loudness of the restaurant. This may not be the right brunch locale for the hungover with pounding headaches. Even with its semi-obnoxious blue and yellow diner-like decor, the food itself is enough of a draw for this soon-to-be regular. As a side note, the Eggs Florentine and omelets are also amazing and my waitress was friendly and attentive.
