I am a chinese food lover
sun wah has great food and resonably priced for the amount you get. My family has been coming here for over 20yrs since my son Joey was 6yrs old(now 26 and he still frequents with friends) my daughter comes from Indiana and brings her kids to Sun Wah. I could go on and on.....

Not worth it.
Too pricey!! Go to the real Chinatown where you can get eight oysters in a cilantro black bean sauce for eight dollars. OK. It is a shorter L ride but for what...a dirty neighborhood and overpriced food, don't think so.

Bigger, nicer, great inexpensive fare, service friendly but slow
Dined there a week after they opened. 2pm. Still a busy place with a good mix of clientele. Nice to see it in a newer, bigger and cleaner place. Food is still very good with the inexpensive prices still intact...they're using the same menus from the old place. The place is big! Service is slower due to the large space. I ordered 4 dishes. Food was good but the last plate came to the table after we finished the other plates. The place was so big it was a challenge to get the attention of the waitstaff to find where our last order was!

Day One
About 20 years ago, I was at the grand opening of Sun Wah. My family and I have eaten their food on a regular (almost weekly) basis for that long. Enough said.

Tricks of Eating
No doubt that this is a very special place. Let me give you a few hints for real enjoyment. 1 Come in a small group (about 6) so you can rate a round table with a lazy susan in the middle so you can spin to what you want. 2. Eat family style so you can get lots of tastes. 3. Ask if the owner Eric is there. If he is, ask him to help you order. He might have some specials you might not have thought to order. 4. Have a Chinese beer with your meal. 5. Order one less entree than number of people. The servings are generous. Their noodles are made on site.

Authentic Asian Cuisine
Sun Wah is as authentic as you can get. This restaurant could exist in Asia and still make it. It is not "American" Chinese food, but the real thing. Everything I have tried there is to die for. If you want the real experience of Chinese dining, this is the place to go. A warning however, the restaurant focuses on the food, not the ambiance. If you are looking for somewhere that looks chic, this isn't the place for you, but if you're looking for real Chinese food, there isn't a better place in Chicago. I've lived in Asia most of my life, and this place makes me feel better when I'm homesick. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants real Chinese food, not the over syrupy, overly seasoned stuff... The servers are nice, and preparation time is excellent. Also they have great recommendations so if you don't know what you want, just tell them what you're in the mood for and they will give you excellent suggestions.
