Yummy & a little different!
Most Chinese restaurants have the same basic things. Shanghai Inn has all those, plus some unusual oens, and everything is good. Make sure to try some of the more unusual items along with the Moo Shoo and Chow Fun - you won't regret it. The servings are large, so plan for leftovers. The egg rolls are amazing, as are the BBQ Ribs. :)

Classic Cantonese
If you are looking for a classic cantonese style restaurant this is the place. Wonton soup, Shrimp with Lobster sauce, all are delicious. This is a family owned restaurant where the service is friendly and the food great. Highly recommended

Are you guys kidding?
We ordered from Shanghai because of the incredibly positive raving reviews. What a disappointment. Let me clarify. This is well prepared reasonably priced "unpleasant" Chinese food. It reminds me of what we had available in this country from China 20 years ago. Bland flavors. Boring ingredients. A total lack of authentic dishes. We had take out but I can't imagine anybody from Asia actually eats at this restaurant. I will strongly recommend others nearby if you want great Chinese outside of China town. Having said this they are nice people with good service. People who like bland food and have never had good Chinese will like it.

The best Chinese food in the area.
Super-friendly owners, high-quality ingredients, large portions, good stuff. We're lucky to live a block away but we'd go the distance for the food if we had to.

Last of a Kind
The last, Old Style, Chicago, Cantonese restaurant around since the Orange Garden changed hands. I can't find Egg Foo Young or Ham Fried Rice any where in the world, let alone Chicago like theres and I spend 1/2 a year in Asia each year.

This will be my first stop if I move back to Chicago.
I currently live in Los Angeles (since 1998) and I first experienced Shanghai Inn when it was located on Lawrence Ave. My grandparents used to take us there at least 30 years ago. Later, I introduced my wife to it. She lived in Northbrook where everyone loves Fong's (Amazing huge egg rolls) but she admits that Shanghai Inn was superior in every way to her hometown restaurant. The potstickers are the best anywhere and the Eight Delicious Chicken is absolutely outta this world!
