better off at home
I should preface this by saying I am in the business so may expect more than the average diner AND I just returned from Italy where every meal is perfection and they will die trying to please you. The quick review: Drink some Italian wine with 3 friends who share your taste preference on the charming outdoor patio and dine elsewhere. Salute is Italian only...wine and food. We arrived at beginning of service on a Sunday. Wait staff was great and plentiful. They were attentive and not at all hovering. Almost the best we've experienced in Chicago. We tipped them very well. Location is charming and comfortable but seemingly built to accommodate couples. Wine list has only a few selections by the glass. :( The ones that are available by the glass are the more pedestrian varieties. This is were it went bad for us– Obviously there is a disconnect in the kitchen. Our food was wrong - meaning the actual dish presented differently than the promised menu version. Considering my "small plate" was no more than 2 ounces of food that I was being charged $8.50 for, the missing elements were obviously major components and essential to the dish...and were missed. We had no time to order something else and didn’t wish to complain given how closely we were seated to other tables. Unfortunately the owner oddly dismissed me when I contacted him via email. He thanked me for my "concern" as if I were there as his advocate spying on his kitchen staff as a courtesy to him rather than what I actually was – a paying customer trying to have a nice time at $25/head. He went on to state that Salute had only been open 2 weeks - I guess he felt I should spend my money giving his staff some much needed practice? What was just plain rude is when he then informed me of a future event he was having (that I of course would pay for). .. as if I would come back. The final straw was when I asked for an apology - no reply and it’s been 2 days now. Wow. To have such arrogance in this economy is pretty brave. I'll stay home and buy a bottle of $50 Amorone instead.
