Pane Caldo (CLOSED)

In a party of four women, I had lunch at Pane Caldo on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. We chose this restaurant based on the AAA recommendation and its proximity to the Drake Hotel where we were staying. I have two complaints. When the waiter asked us what we would like to drink, all of us requested water, and two of us requested a glass of wine in addition to the water. The waiter asked if we would prefer sparking or still water, and we selected still. Only after the meal when we asked for our checks did we learn that, not only were we being charged for the water, but that the charge was $9.00 a bottle. My second complaint pertains to the item I ordered, gnocchi with a gorgonzola tomato sauce. I found this dish far too salty to enjoy.

First time to Pane Caldo. The atmosphere was nice, kind of warm and cosy. The reception was very nice, but our waiter was not very good. He just did not make the effort to connect with us at all. He seemed more interested in getting back to the bar where he could chat with other servers. We kept having to wave him over to get service. Portions were very small...one shrimp in the shrimp penne appetizer? And the tail was still on the shrimp...how on earth is one to gracefully get the tail off when it is swimming in sauce? However, the flavor was very good. Overall, a dissappointing experience, because it has the potential to be so much more than it was.

Hands down the best upscale Italian restaurant in Chicago area. You won't find better service or better food anywhere. The ambiance is lovely.

took some friends of mine. best food in chicago. great service, tremendous wines by the glass, friendly company, intimate side walk dining expereince. great place to watch people walk by while you eat!

We always try to dine there when in Chicago. Quiant and romantic, great wine selection.
