Poor Service
Lutz used to be a great place - not any more! The new owners have cut back on quality and the service - forget about it! Very snotty attitude. It's almost as if they're doing you a favor. And, to place an order over the telephone - the service is even worse! They barely listen to you and cut you off while ordering. I will never go back to Lutz again!

Excelent Apple Strudel
I used to go to this place when I just came to live in Chicago 32 years ago for the cakes; the coffee was never the best, but ok in combination with the cake. I remember the strawberry cake used to be the best I tried in Chicago: very fluffy and made with real cream. The Napoleon used to be good too, also made with real cream, very fluffy and the dough made to a perfect finish and texture. I went today Jan. 21/10, had some Apple Strudel, it had the same good quality, I also had a Napoleon, and I was disappointed about the quality change. The lady that served it said "it was made this morning", but probably they had mixed cakes made today with some made several days ago. The dough was hard and all stuck together and the filling was not fluffy, but pasty and didn't taste like made with real cream. They may think that for $3.90 what better could you get...? Well, charge $1.00 more, and do not compromise the quality.

Great sweets and coffee, minus ambiance

To bad!
All the charm is lost, the cake was served on plastic plates and coffee in paper cups.It was nothing like it used to be. Quite sad that the new owners had to cut so many corners. As I was leaving a couple was walking out behind me and said that they won't be back,I turned to ask them why and they pin-pointed the exact reason. There is nothing authentic about the place anymore, they should change there name and save themselves alot of embaressment.

Great Viennese Konditorei
A terrific Viennese coffee & pastry shop--a true konditorei. Amazing selection of cakes, tortes, marzipan or ice cream creations, many of which can be viewed in the bakery displays at the front or in the rotating displays in the cafe proper. Old World manners and civility prevail--possibly a bit "stuffy" for some, but wonderful if you understand where they're coming from. Amazing hot cocoa service brought out in silver serving tray, with decorative dollop of whipped cream "schlag" on the side. Hazelnut tortes and rum krokants not to be missed. They've been at the same location for as long as I can remember. A little gem of a place. (Note: check out the sparkling clean bathrooms: little rooms with floor-to-ceiling doors inside the bigger room...)
