Sorachi Ace a japanese brewery developed the hop variety "sorachi ace" in 1988. a cross between the british "brewer’s gold" and the czech "saaz" varieties, it exhibited a quality that was unexpected-it smelled really lemony, so they rejected it. now grown by a single farm in oregon it brings a bright spicy lemon zest aroma backed by a wonderfully clean malt flavor  (750ml) 20.00
Black Ops barrel-aged in woodford reserve bottles, brooklyn black ops does not exist. how - ever, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout concocted by the brooklyn brewing team under cover of secrecy, hidden from everyone else at the brewery. suppo sedly, black ops was aged for 4 months in bour - bon barrels, bottled flat, & re-fer men ted with champagne yeast, creating big chocolate & coffee flavors w/a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak notes. they say there are only 1000 cases. we have no idea what they’re talking about. only occasional availability-ask your server  (750ml) 35.00
Hopfen-Weisse brooklyn’s garrett oliver traveled to the 400 yr-old schneider brewery in kel heim, germany to produce this collabo ration. a recently-tasted bottle has proven that aging is tremendously beneficial. even garrett likely doesn’t have any of these bottles, but we do! they pour pale orange with a head thick enough to rest a quarter on. notes of spicy yeast & tropical citrus  (750ml) 35.00

Tank 7 (smokestack series) there’s a fermenter, number seven, the black sheep of boule - vard’s cellar family. when their brewers were experimenting w/variations on a traditional belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. you could call it fate, but they called it tank 7. begins w/a big surge of fruity aromatics & grapefruithoppy notes; this complex, straw-colored ale tapers to a peppery, dry finish.   
Double-Wide IPA (smokestack series) brewed w/columbus & magnum hops for both bittering & aroma, w/chinook hops added in the whirlpool. dry-hopped w/generous amounts of cascade, centennial, & chinook. hop-for - ward aroma redolent of peach & apricot. assertive flavor bursts w/citrus qualities (blood orange, lemon), w/a slight caramelmalt backbone balancing the intense hop flavor. not at all restrained-certainly not for the conservative palate.

Farson’s - Lacto Stout from the makers of our namesake hopleaf pale ale! brewed according to the original 1946 recipe w/unfermentable lactose adding sweetness & body, this black beer sports a pale brown head, red licorice aromas, moderate malti ness, some chocolate & herbal notes. sweet w/pleasant dryness in the finish. this style, aka milk stout, was originally made w/whey, was high in b vitamins and low in alcohol, and so was rationed to pregnant & nursing mothers during wwii.  (12oz) 6.00

Mikkeller founded in 2006 by home brewers mikkel borg bjergs and kristian klarup keller with the intention of "challenging the danes’ taste buds with intense taste adventures." mik kel ler found some inspiration for their widely-varied, edgy brewing approach "on the other side of the atlantic ocean where the american breweries aren’t afraid to play and break all the rules." mikkeller is a so-called "phantom" microbrewery based in copen - hagen that brews at a variety of host facilities in several different countries, including denmark, nor way, belgium, the uk, and the united states. many of their beers are "oneoffs". we will always have an example. ask your server what we have today

Ridgeway - Bitter master brewer peter scholey of the late lament ed brakspear brewery is brewing classic english ales including this easy-drinking, low-alcohol session ale. challenger & boadica hops & maris otter malt in perfect balance  (500ml) 10.00
Flag - Porter several bottles of porter recovered from an 1825 english channel shipwreck found their way to brewing scien tist keith thomas in 1988. one bottle yield ed enough yeast y sediment to culture up & use in a whitbread porter recipe from the period. once the most popular brewing style in eng land, porter fell out of favor & for a time was not produced at all. in a great revival, the style is pre sented here in its original glory  (12oz) 6.00

Imperial Stout brewed to a high alcohol level to survive trans port to the czarist courts in st. peters - burg, this is a rich, roasty ale w/alcohol warmth & flavor   
Old Brewery Pale Ale a light "session" ale, known as "old brew - ery bitter" in the u.k.   
Oatmeal Stout on early labels, described as nutritional & recom mended for lactating mothers, this bitter sweet ale is hearty & substantial   

Ireland

Guinness - Pub Draft available in 120 countries in 19 variations of which only 6 come from the original st. james gate brewery in dublin, including this one, the nitrogen-cap suled can. the brewery claims to use the original yeast; all the grain for the st. james version is grown in ireland  (14.9oz can) 6.00

Germany

G. Schneider & Sohn - Aventinus the world’s oldest top-fermenting wheat doppelbock, made since 1907 as a creative response to bottom-fermented dop pel bocks popular at the time. 8% "aventinus has a huge head, an insistent sparkle, malty notes in the nose, chocolate, fruit & spices in the palate and slightly clove-like finish.  (16.9oz) 8.00
Schlossbrauerei Au Hallertau - 1809 Berliner Weisse one of the rare, antique & interesting regional beer styles of germany. a wheat beer brewed w/top-fermenting yeast & lactobacillus culture, with wort that is not boiled but heated to just below boiling before transfer to open fermenters. germans are forbidden by reinhetsgebot (the pure beer law of 1516) to add anything but water, grain, hops & yeast to beer, but they often subvert the law when serv ing berlingerweisse by offering it "rot oder grun"red or green by adding raspberry or woodruff syrup. at hopleaf you may have it pure, red or green. tart, sour & acidic, a historic adventure in beer  (20oz) 12.00

Leipziger Gose top-fermented wheat beer, 60% wheat/ 40% barley, plus coriander, salt & lactic acid bacteria. a rare german beer that’s not "reinheitsgebot" it has ingredients other than malt, hops, yeast & water. refreshing & full of interesting flavor  (750ml) 30.00

Austria

Stiegl - Pils lewes, delaware. a saaz hop "green bottle" lager/pils in its true state, protected from uv rays by the can and avoiding the familiar "skunkiness". clean, light and crisp  (500ml can) 6.00

Austria - Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg $10

Samichlaus once "the world’s strongest beer". made in switzerland for over 20 yrs. brewed only on st. nicholas day (dec. 6th) then lagered for 10 months before bottling for the next year’s celebration. 4 malts: 1 pale, 3 dark. fermented at high temps for 2 wks., it exhibits densely malty creaminess w/some yeast notes, & a warming brandy-like alcohol finish. great w/robust dishes, chocolate, or on its own after dinner.   
Samichlaus Helles strong and sippable! sweet & alcoholic aroma; pours bright gold w/no head. clinging honey sweetness to start, followed by alcoholic heat, yeast & malt, faint cherry? despite uncarbonated appearance, it sparkles on the tongue. balanced and dry in the finish
