    Genuine Italian

I was not expecting anything special when I booked this place during a trip to my hometown--partly I just wanted to see how the neighborhood had changed in the last several years. But I'm very glad I went (with my guests), and was impressed with the overall quality of Gioco. The room is rustic/warehouse-interesting and comfortable. Two classic Italian dishes--papardelle con ragu di cinghiale and saltimbocca alla romana--were executed perfectly. The braised lamb shank was outstanding. Service was friendly & efficient. I hope it doesn't change, because I definitely will make a return visit on my next trip to Chicago.

    good but not great

Our appetizer of tiny meatballs in tomato sauce with mozzarella was very good. My husband's veal was tough. I had the strip steak with new potatoes in Barolo, which was moist and flavorful and the sauce wasn't too rich. Service was efficient and pleasant.

    Good for dates

I went with my husband and friend. We had the mussels which came in a tomato broth. Very nicely cooked but we preferred the classic white wine and garlic. Our two pizze weren't great. Nice toppings but loaded with olive oil on top. The crust came out like a cracker. My friend had a pasta which is ok. The atmosphere is great for a date especially if you're in the south loop
