    Thank god for second chances

Went here with my partner this weekend. I really liked the space, and overall the food was really good. We ordered cocktails first, and they took a while to come to our table which seemed strange because it wasn't really that busy. But we have both worked as servers so we aren't too demanding, and we really don't like to make a fuss. I had the farm fresh mojito, and I could barely get down one sip. It was all club soda and didn't have even a trace of sweetness, so I decided to order something different. Just as I started to look for our waiter, the manager came over to check on us and apologized for how long our cocktails took. Before I could even say anything he said he would like to buy us two desserts and coffee at the end of the meal. So we thought, well, 'score!'. But then I brought up the cocktail, and when I said I wanted to order something different he INSISTED that I let him personally make me a new one. Which he did and brought back right away and it was just fantastic. We had several appetizers - I had the crispy prawn cocktail and my partner had the tuna sashimi, both of which were excellent. I was impressed by the quality of the seafood. We also split the barley and wild mushroom salad, which was good but fairly basic. For entrees, I had the steak frites (truffle fries!) & my partner got beef tenderloin. We don't eat meat a lot, so it was a treat. But our problem is we always order medium rare, and we frequently get our food overcooked. This was no exception. My steak frites was pretty medium close to well, but it was so thin and juicy anyway (and the big dollop of herb butter on top helped tremendously) that I decided to eat it anyway. My partner on the other hand had this big beautiful piece of tenderloin that was ash gray in the middle! He sent it back, and when the new one came it was out of this world - cooked perfectly and such a high quality piece of meat that it just melted in your mouth. We got our free desserts - the white chocolate bread pudding was kind of 'eh', but the sour cherry pain perdu was an excellent way to finish the meal. When we got our check, in addition to the desserts/coffee we had another 20% taken off the total, so we saved $45 when you add it up. So, we had a couple of misses, but they were corrected and the restaurant went out of their way to make sure we were happy. And we didn't need to be demanding a-holes or anything - they knew they had screwed up. Would definitely go back.

    surprisingly good sushi!

Went to Farmerie 58 for dinner with work associates last Friday nite. We scanned the menu and decided to go exclusively with the sushi. I agree with prior reviewers that sushi in an "American Bistro" is unusual but it should be noted that the sushi we ordered turned out to be outstanding in presentation, flavor, and quantity. Between 4 of us we ordered 8 different rolls and 4 types of nigiri - each and every one was a winner. Sure you can get cheaper maki at any Mom n' Pop sushi joint but these were some unique offerings. In contrast to other reviews, I would vote "thumbs up" on the decor - it is serene, balanced and zen-like - perfect for an excellent sushi dinner. Moreover, I don't need a restaurant experience to feel so "warm" that I feel like I'm eating in my own den - that's what my den and Campbell's Chunky are for. Overall I would say the experience was great, all around and I (as well as my colleagues) all commented that we would be returning. My only dilemma will be whether to stray from the sushi and order from the bistro menu.

    the good and the bad

Previous review is obviously a shill, so here's a real one for you. Food is very good. Lots of flavor profiles on the plate, but everything comes together very well. Nice flavor combinations and clearly much thought goes into each dish we tried. Service atrocious given the nearly empty dining room. Had to flag down waiter & busboy for water, drink refills, silverware, basic amenities. Could understand if it was busy but it wasn't. Wine list laughably pedestrian, bottles that can be easily found at Walgreens. Even still the waiter was hard pressed to describe a single wine we asked about. Sushi offerings unneccessary and distracting. No need for sushi at an "American Bistro" & had I not tasted the food I would doubt the chops of an "American Bistro" that serves sushi. Furthermore, having had several disappointing dinners at Republic in the past, I wouldn't go near the sushi anyway. Hopefully they will do away with the sushi before the real critics (Vettel, etc) get in there because otherwise they will be ripped to shreds, and the food coming out of the kitchen doesn't deserve that. Decor is sparse, cold, not at all in line with a "bistro." Prices are very fair. I would only return if I hear that these distractions are remedied. Otherwise I will follow the chef to his next endeavor.

    breath of fresh air!!!!

My boyfriend took me here for a casual date and it was fantastic! First off, I loved the warm atmosphere everyone from the hostesses to the sushi chefs smiled and greeted us as we came in, no snobbery anywhere. The upstairs dining room was real cute- we got a great view of outside at our window table. The menu was really impressive, i was delighted to see such a unique approach to your typical american food. I got the salmon- and it was perfectly cooked over risotto, it was absolutely amazing. My boyfriend go the black cod which he said was fantastic. We couldn't stop talking about how f***ing good the food was! Farmerie 58 spiced up the casual date night thing and was a breath of fresh air (skip the chains and expensive steak houses with no character.) Loved it. Cant wait to go back and try out the rest of the menu!

    This place is great

I loved everything, but the raw bar doesn't match an "American" format.
