    Disappointing

Based on positive reviews, and going to the nearby auditorium theatre, we decided to try the Custom House. The ambiance is serene and the service was excellent - attentive and gracious . However the food was disappointing, very salty, with unpleasant tastes, some very small portions, and over-priced for the quality. For appetizers, the sweetbreads, while tasty, were a very small portion. The pate was an exceedingly small portion (priced at about $10.00) and had an unexpected sweet taste. The farmhouse chicken (priced at $22.00) was very salty, with sweet mushrooms, almost inedible, and a very small portion of chicken. The hamburgers (priced at $14.00) were overcooked and ordinary. The lemon tart for desert (priced at $10.00) was a rather tiny portion. We wouldn't return.

    salt and bitterness

A bit too salty for my taste. The meat was cooked to perfection with good flavor. Sweetbreads were a bit soggy and the house made bacon was limp and flavorless. Seafood was fine, yet nothing spacial. All the side dishes we had were really over-seasoned and the cauliflower gratin was just not good at all. Bitter and gritty. I should have returned it, but we were just over it. I finished with the trio of sorbet. The lemon had the best texture but was a bit too sweet. The others, pear and orange/cranberry were not very good. The insipid grey/brown color of the pear sorbet was just gross. I really wanted to like this place. Coming from L.A. and spending a few months a year in NYC and Tokyo, This restaurant is far from world class.

    My Windy City Favorite!!

As a New Yorker, I'm no stranger to great restaurants but every time I visit my daughter in Chicago, I make time to visit the Custom House. It consistently delivers incredible food and ABOVE incredible service. The short ribs are polenta are so fabulous that I never deviate from those dishes, even though my daughter raves about her choices! THe waiters and entire staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and exceptional in every way. THis is truly my Windy City favorite and I can't wait to go back.

    Meat, Meat, Meat!

Excellent restaurant, way beyond an ordinary steakhouse--well, it's Shawn McClain cooking, so it would be.
