    Not What I Expected

Well, my mom and I went to Dixie Kitchen and we didn't like it too much. So, I really didn't want to go to Calypso because they have the same owner. I ordered nachos and they were very delicious (too me lol). They had plaintain chips and the were fresh and crunchy. But if your on a diet don't go there to often. They also barely put ice in my drinks so I have to ask for extra every time. But other besides that I like it, and I would reccommend it to everyone.

    conch fritters!!!!

This is one of very few places in Chicago where you can get really good conch fritters-- to me, that makes it a treasure more valuable than any hospital or public library. Also, there are a few entrees I really love-- the bowtie pasta with shrimp and chipotle sauce is pretty great. The decor is charming and the waiters and waitresses and bus-boys and bus-girls have always been nice to me , sometimes even delightful and charming. The only problem is that they don't deliver.

    Casual fun dining

Calypso Cafe is probably one of many places that don't seem to get the attention they deserve. The atmosphere of the restuarant is right on with the menu selections. There is a little bit for everyone on the menu from vegetarian selections to those who are daring enough and want to try some Blackened & Crusted Tilapia dinner. The Plaintain Nachos with jerk chicken is suitable for 2 to 3 people. The desserts are very yummy from Pineapple Upsidedown Cake to the house specialty Key Lime Pie. The staff are nice, friendly and accomodating to your needs. You should make this a stop when you head down to Hyde Park.

    Not Real Jamaican Food

The food is good, but it isn't Jamaican food. The owners are not Jamaican and none of the staff or cooks are. The Jerk Chicken is actually some really nice teriyaki tasting chicken. I've been three times, and the service has been less than stellar everytime. The atmosphere is nice and the drinks are really good.
