outstanding cakes and pastries, but this is a great spot for casual breakfast or lunch. the menu is small, but the quality of thefood is excelleent. we have never been disappointed with anything we ordered, and this is a "go to" place when you need to bring a hostess gift or dessert for an occasion.

A little slice of heaven in Chicago

I've been going to Bittersweet for quite some time now, and I have to say, every time I go back, I'm more impressed than the last time. They have divine treats for lunch, and their desserts are absolutely heavenly. It's like you're in Paris at a fine Cafe. I would recommend Bittersweet to everyone who enjoys indulging on deliciously divine food! I will continue to go there for the rest of my time in Chicago, that's a promise!

Not recommended for anything other than cakes

When we first moved to Chicago 3 years ago, my husband and ate a meal at Bittersweet and were very disappointed. We found it overpriced, and the menu was limited. However, I did order a cake from Bittersweet for my husband's birthday which was fairly good. My husband and I decided to give Bittersweet a second chance for a quick meal. Big mistake. The service there is attrocious (read non-existent)--none of the staff are welcoming, pay much attention to their patrons, or seem very competent (we had to ask to have our table cleaned and even to order because they kept us waiting for 10+ minutes). The menu is still extremely limited. It took over 20 minutes to serve our (extremely simple) salads, which I find unacceptable. We finally had to ask to get our food to go. I was so annoyed I didn't even ask for dessert.

    Great pastry shop

They have great pastries. Good prices. There's seating available, but it's relatively limited. I usually haven't had to wait too long for a table. I've only gotten their desserts, but they do also offer a limited lunch menu.
