I give Al's 3 stars because the beef is actually really good. The hot dogs are good. The fries are ok, but nothing to rave about. On the occasion that my taste buds tell me that it has to be Al's, I usually buy the sandwiches there and then head over to the Maxwell St. Polish sausage joints for the fries, peppers and atmosphere. My biggest beef with Al's is this, "WHERE'S THE BEEF?!" Pretty expensive for a pretty slim sandwich, even the "big beef". And, you have to pay extra for peppers!! By the time a hungry guy buys two sandwiches with peppers, fries, etc, you can easily top $20. Great taste, less filling, not that great of a deal. But, every once in awhile, the taste buds say Al's. My best alternatives are Patio, a few blocks west on Taylor. Not as well seasoned as Al's, but definitely delicious and well stacked on the bun. Also, Fred & Jack's @ 76th & Vincennes on the South Side. Sometimes the quality varies, but the beef sandwich is WELL stacked, you can even get a double, and although red sauce is not the traditional way, theirs is great- not spaghetti sauce. Portillo's is a good taste and value too! Eat at Al's when their unique taste is what you want. Not, if you want to get full without emptying the wallet for a simple beef sandwich, try the alternatives above. I would give Al's 4 1/2 stars if they simply loaded the bun!

This place blows!! I agree with the last post.. No seats for paying customers..? Save your money , go to Harlem and Irving park rd. you can get two tasty beefs for the price of one over priced crappy Al's. Oh yes you can sit at Mr. Beefs in comfort..

I have had Italian beef and sausage combo sandwiches all over chicago and the suburbs, but I had one last friday and it cost over 9 dollars with no extras or sides, and was very small with not much beef.I complained and the staff, in unison swore at me and told me to leave!!! You can get way better and much larger sandwiches all over this city for half the price including fries and drink and served with a smile not the smug attitude i found at Al,s . would not recommend this place to my worst enemie!!!

I moved away from Chicago for 3 years and one of the reasons I decided to move back was for the food! I missed AL's beef! The atmosphere is pure Chicago city living and the beef is as good as ever. A true comfort food.
